CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, June 1, 2016) – LA Galaxy forward Robbie Keane has been named to the 23-man roster to represent the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA European Championship 2016, marking his second-straight UEFA Euro tournament. EURO 2016 will be held in France from Friday, June 10, through Sunday, July 10.
Keane will miss the Galaxy’s MLS matches against Sporting Kansas City (June 2), Toronto FC (June 18) and the Colorado Rapids (June 22) in addition to further matches should Ireland advance from the group stage.
Ireland are in Group E alongside Sweden, Belgium and Italy during the 15th edition of the European Championship. The Galaxy forward represent his country during games on Monday, June 13 (Sweden), Saturday, June 18 (Belgium) and Wednesday June 22 (Italy) during the group stage. Keane would remain with Ireland should they advance from the group stage for as long as the team remains in the tournament, which ends with the final on Sunday, July 10 at Stade de France.
Keane, 35, is Ireland’s captain and leader for the most goals and appearances all time for his country. This season for the Galaxy, Keane has notched four goals in six appearances, bringing his MLS total to 77 goals in regular season competitions. In all competitions for LA, Keane has tallied 98 goals through 147 appearances, just two shy of reaching 100 goals in all competitions in the fewest amount games played by any MLS player.
Ireland qualified for the finals for the third time by beating Bosnia-Herzegovina in a play-off in November.
