CARSON, Calif. –Steven Gerrard confirmed on Tuesday that he turned down offers in England and in Europe in order to sign with the LA Galaxy.
Speaking at his first media availability since joining the Galaxy, Gerrard addressed reports that linked him to a potential stay in the Premier League or in Europe. The 35-year-old Gerrard admitted that the offers were on the table for him to stay on the old continent but the rigorous attention of the Galaxy, and his desire not to compete against his beloved Liverpool FC tipped the scales in favor of a move to Major League Soccer.
“What struck me the most was how aggressive [the Galaxy] were in trying to get me to come here. That made me feel very important and wanted. That’s key when you’re a footballer,” Gerrard said. “I had options to stay in the Premier League and around Europe but I didn’t want to compete against Liverpool. I love Liverpool Football Club, and I always will do. I’m still a fan to this day, I will be for the rest of my life but I needed a new challenge and a fresh challenge.
“I didn’t want to become a squad player or a sub for the club that I love, after being a regular in the club for so long. This [opportunity] came through me from my agent around October-November. I had a short time to think about it, and I spoke to Bruce and Chris, and after one or two conversations, I knew this was the place for me.”
