Three Points: The LA Galaxy hang six on the Colorado Rapids

CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano’s Three Points to the Galaxy’s 6-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids.

OPENING MINUTE RED CARD CHANGES GAME

Colorado Rapids entered the match with the LA Galaxy believing that they could snap their six-game losing streak. Well, that hope lasted about 60 seconds.

Just 33 seconds into the match, Rapids goalkeeper Joe Nasco brought down Galaxy forward Alan Gordon prompting a straight red card from referee Baldomero Toledo just nine minutes later.  Forced to go to his bench, Colorado boss Pablo Mastroeni brought on Clint Irwin to take over in net and attempt to stop the Galaxy’s ensuing penalty.

Irwin’s attempts ultimately fell short as Landon Donovan converted the first of his two penalty kick goals on the evening and from there, the rout was on.

GYASI ZARDES’ CAREER SEASON KEEPS ON GOING

Who needs Robbie Keane when you’ve got Gyasi Zardes?

The hottest scorer in MLS kept up his incredible hot streak with two goals in the Galaxy’s 6-0 rout of the Colorado Rapids.  Showing confident movement both on and off the ball, Zardes befuddled Rapids defenders consistently across 90 minutes.  Zardes broke through in the 45th with a clever finish from close range before tallying again in the 75th minute.

With his goals, Zardes is now tied with Robbie Keane for the LA Galaxy team lead at 14 goals. The Galaxy striker has also become the highest scoring MLS Homegrown Player in league history.

THE DRIVE FOR FIVE TRULY STARTS

A month ago, the LA Galaxy were languishing against the Colorado Rapids and needed a dramatic comeback, this time around, a much more mature Galaxy team needed no such comeback.

Fueled by the emotional circumstances involving the tragic passing of A.J. DeLaGarza’s son Luca a day earlier and aided by a red card in the first minute of play, the Galaxy exploded offensively. Landon Donovan, Baggio Husidic and Gyasi Zardes each tallied a brace as the Galaxy won by their widest margin since June 1998 when they defeated the Dallas Burn, 8-1, in a match that still stands as the largest victory in league history. After their thumping of the Rapids, the Galaxy have now scored 19 goals during their five-game winning streak and are currently second in the MLS Supporters’ Shield standings.

More and more the Galaxy appear to be a team destined to make a championship run and after yet another dominant performance, LA seemed poised to make their run for a fifth MLS Cup title.
