Three things we learned from the LA Galaxy’s 1-0 win over Houston Dynamo

HOUSTON – LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano provides his “Three Things We Learned” from the Galaxy’s 1-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo.

GORDO SCORES GAME-WINNER ON HIS BIRTHDAY

Alan Gordon came to the rescue for the LA Galaxy with a timely finish that snapped the Galaxy’s two-game losing streak

Gordo notched his third goal in five games with a fortuitous finish after a clearance by David Horst bounced off the forward’s knee and into the back of the net. Gordon celebrated his goal by blowing out the candles on an imaginary birthday cake. How clever!

In recent weeks, Gordon has become a key contributor to the Galaxy’s attack, and it will be interesting to see if he retains his place in the starting lineup when the likes of Robbie Keane and Gyasi Zardes return from injury.

LANDON DONOVAN LOOKS SOLID IN FIRST START SINCE 2014

The recently unretired Landon Donovan made his first start since 2014 in the Galaxy’s 1-0 win over the Dynamo.

Despite making his first start since ending his retirement last month, Donovan was active throughout his 62-minute shift. The 34-year-old’s best moment came in the first half when he nearly put the Galaxy ahead in the 24th minute with an impressive cut through the defense that was ultimately deflected by a Dynamo defender.

With Steven Gerrard (hamstring) and Robbie Keane (hip flexor tightness) out with injuries, Bruce Arena will likely lean on Donovan yet again when the Galaxy end the regular season next Sunday against FC Dallas.

LA GALAXY LOCK DOWN THIRD SEED IN WESTERN CONFERENCE WITH TIMELY WIN

The LA Galaxy secured the third spot in the Western Conference with their victory over the Houston Dynamo on Sunday.

Los Angeles earned a home match for the Knockout Round and the third seed in the Western Conference with their win and a loss by Seattle Sounders FC and a draw by Real Salt Lake. Having clinched that third spot, Bruce Arena will now have a choice to rest his starters on Sunday when the Galaxy play their final game of the regular season.

After ending their season on the road a year ago, the home playoff game is a major boost to the Galaxy’s postseason aspirations.
