Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1927, Leon Silverman answered the call of duty during his junior year of high school by enlisting in the United States Navy in 1945, determined to become a Navy pilot. Though he was ready to serve immediately, he waited seven months before receiving orders to report to boot camp in Samson, New York.

As World War II came to a close in Europe, Leon completed 12 weeks of intensive training before being transferred to the Great Lakes Naval Station, where he attended Storekeeper Disbursing School. His service took a challenging turn when he was diagnosed with lobar pneumonia and hospitalized. But Leon recovered and returned to duty, taking on physically demanding work loading boxcars and supporting base operations during the post-war transition.

He was later transferred to the Lido Beach Separation Center on Long Island, where he served in the motor pool, driving trucks and supporting logistics until his honorable discharge in 1946.

Following his military service, Leon attended UCLA, where he tried out for the freshman basketball team under the legendary Coach John Wooden. He went on to build a global career as an accountant with the U.S. Air Force, traveling the world in service once again.

Now, celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary, Leon stands as a symbol of endurance, talent, and grace.

The LA Galaxy thanks you, Leon, and your family for your service and dedication to our country and community.
