Jermaine Jones

A powerful box-to-box midfielder who is strong on the tackle, Jones made his name in the German Bundesliga where he has played for Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04 … has experienced at the highest levels of soccer for both club and country, with starts at the FIFA World Cup (2014 with the United States) and in UEFA Champions League (2004-05, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14) … became the second U.S. men’s national team player to score in the UEFA Champions League knockout stage (joining DaMarcus Beasley) when he tallied Schalke’s lone goal in a 1-1 road draw against Galatasaray of Turkey on Feb. 20, 2013 … he was born to a German mother and American father in Frankfurt and has dual citizenship … was capped by Germany three times before applying for a change of association granted by FIFA that allowed him to become eligible to represent the U.S.

OUTSIDE MLS: Has played 14 professional seasons, all in Europe … began his professional career in 2000 with Eintracht Frankfurt (GER) where he made 93 appearances with the club’s first team in four seasons, while also splitting time with the club’s reserve/Under-23 side … during his time in Frankfurt, Jones played in both Bundesliga and 2 Bundesliga, as Eintracht Frankfurt was relegated to the second division for the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons, before gaining promotion back in 2003-04 … in July 2004, moved to Bayer Leverkusen (GER) on a free transfer where he again split time between the club’s first team and reserve side, and made two appearances in UEFA Champions League group play … loaned back to Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2005, where he made 14 appearances, scoring three goals and adding five assists before the 2 Bundesliga season concluded in May … at the end of his loan, Jones re-signed with Eintracht Frankfurt and made 29 combined appearances in Bundesliga and German Cup matches in 2005-06 and 2006-07 … signed with FC Schalke 04 (GER) in July 2007 and became a mainstay in the S04 lineup .. in two seasons, he made 59 league appearances, eight UEFA Champions League appearances (on the way to a quarterfinal appearance), four UEFA Cup appearances and additional appearances in UEFA Champions League qualification … a shin injury prevented him from playing during the entire 2009-10 season and he finally returned to the field in a German Cup game on August 14, 2010 … made 10 league appearances with S04 before going on a six-month loan to England’s Blackburn Rovers in January 2011, where he made 15 appearances … returned to Schalke 04 ahead of the 2011-12 season and made 59 league appearances in the next two-and-a-half seasons, and also made eight appearances in UEFA Europa League as Schalke advanced to the 2011-12 quarterfinals … made six appearances in the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League as S04 advanced to the Round of 16, and three appearances in group play in the 2013-14 Champions League to help Schalke advance to the knock-out stage for the second year in a row … in January 2014, Jones was loaned to Turkey’s Besiktas through the end of the season, making 10 appearances.

INTERNATIONAL: Has 46 caps with the U.S. National Team as of Aug. 1, 2014 … has scored three goals and four assists ... became eligible to represent the U.S. after his documentation was approved by FIFA on Oct. 20, 2009, following his petition to switch from representing Germany …the shin injury that kept him out of his 2009-10 club season at FC Schalke 04 prevented him from being called into Bob Bradley’s team immediately after the switch … made his U.S. debut on Oct. 9, 2010, against Poland in Chicago …in his debut, recorded an assist on Jozy Altidore’s goal in the 2-2 draw … made 12 appearances in 2011, including eight starts … scored his first international goal – also the game-winner- against Jamaica on June 19, 2011, helping the U.S. advance to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup … made 12 appearances (11 starts) in 2012 … captained the team in matches against Venezuela (Jan. 21, 2012) and Panama (Jan. 25, 2012) … scored his second international goal against Scotland (May 26, 2012) in Jacksonville … started 12 games in 2013, including seven starts during the Hexagonal (final) round of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup … assisted a Clint Dempsey goal against Honduras (Feb. 6) in World Cup qualifying at Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano … has started all seven of his appearances in 2014, including all four of the U.S. matches at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil … scored his first World Cup goal against Portugal (June 22) which leveled the game in the 64th minute … also recorded an assist on Clint Dempsey’s goal against Ghana (June 16). Made three total appearances for Germany in friendlies in 2008 … made his senior international debut on Feb. 6, 2008, in a 3-0 road win over Austria … he came on as an 82nd minute substitute for Thomas Hitzlsperger … also a halftime substitute for Michael Ballack in a 2-2 draw against Belarus on May 27, 2008 … made his final senior appearance for Germany as a starter in the central midfield in a 2-1 loss against England (Nov. 19, 2008) … also made eight appearances for the German Under-21 team.
