Three Points: Looking ahead to FC Dallas

CARSON, Calif. – The “Three Points” heading into Sunday’s match against FC Dallas…

Much of the speculation this week has centered on the availability of LA Galaxy captain Landon Donovan and with the forward listed as questionable with a left hamstring strain, it appears likely that LA will need a replacement on Sunday.

Since suffering the strain while on International duty with the United States, Donovan has been limited at practice and missed Thursday’s CONCACAF Champions League match against Isidro Metapán. Despite missing Thursday’s match, Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena has repeatedly told reporters this week that the club will take as much time as possible before deciding if Donovan can participate on Sunday.

If Donovan is unable to start, expect Mike Magee to step in for Donovan and partner alongside Robbie Keane up top for the Galaxy. This partnership has had some success against Dallas in the past as the two combined for the game winning goal during LA’s 1-0 victory over FCD on July 28th.

Seminal to FC Dallas’ recent run of form has been the play of the club’s lively Colombian playmaker David Ferreira.

Although Ferreira returned to action ten matches ago after a long injury spell, he has begun to find his form since the last meeting between the two clubs. In the four games since FCD’s loss to the Galaxy, Ferreira has tallied a pair of goals –both game winners—and four assists.  But perhaps what makes Ferreira dangerous is that his silky passes combined with the speed of Brek Shea and Fabian Castillo, among others creates a dynamic Dallas attack that is always a threat to score.

For the Galaxy to pick up a victory, they must attempt to slow down the Colombian and cut off his ability to connect with his attacker’s going forward. Expect LA midfielders David Beckham and Juninho to be physical with Ferreira from the outset and prevent him from influencing the match.

FC Dallas may enter Sunday’s match as one of the league’s hottest teams with three straight wins and a four game unbeaten streak, they’ll be facing a Galaxy side that is on a run of their own as of late with a three game unbeaten streak in all competitions.

Sunday’s match features a number of tantalizing match-ups like LA’s Omar Gonzalez vs. FCD’s returning Panamanian forward Blas Perez, David Beckham against David Ferreira, Brek Shea  and Robbie Keane against George John just to name a few.

Ultimately, in what may become a highly entertaining track meet, the team that is able to rise to the occasion will be able to pick up the three points and continue their run to the Western Conference playoffs.
