Bruce Arena says Todd Dunivant will be unavailable until late July

CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy will be without the services of left back Todd Dunivant until July according to head coach Bruce Arena after he revealed that the defender recently underwent surgery to repair an abdominal injury.

The Galaxy boss told reporters following training on Thursday that Dunivant underwent surgery to repair an abdominal tear earlier this month. Dunivant has been unavailable for the Galaxy since suffering an abdominal injury during the Galaxy’s 3-0 victory over Chivas USA on April 6.

“It’s probably late July,” Arena said about Dunivant’s timetable back to the field. “He had the surgery two or three weeks ago….If it didn’t heal from not having surgery and he had to have surgery that it is more severe than [a strain] and it will take a little bit more time.

“The reason that you have the surgery is to heal the tear,” he added before later mentioning that the abdominal tear resembles a sports hernia injury. “The thinking is that he’ll be healed.”

Dunivant had appeared to be returning to the field in early May, but suffered a setback prior to LA’s match with the Colorado Rapids that ultimately led to the procedure taking place.

With Dunivant unavailable, the Galaxy have turned to A.J. DeLaGarza who has played six matches at left back in place of the injured 33-year-old defender.  Although the Galaxy will be without former MLS Best XI full back for at least a month, Arena asserted that the club can recover.

“This goes with the territory,” said Arena. “When you have sports teams, there are injuries.”
