Match Report: LA Galaxy advance to the Open Cup Quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over Republic FC

CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy advanced to the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals for the third consecutive season with a 2-0 victory over Sacramento Republic on Wednesday evening at the StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium.

Ariel Lassiter and Bradford Jamieson IV provided the goals as Los Angeles took another step toward their third U.S. Open Cup trophy.

The visitors began the match on the front foot repeatedly threatening the Galaxy back four. Sacramento nearly got on the board first in the 18th minute when Tyler Blackwood deftly turned past a Galaxy defender and launched a shot that was saved by goalkeeper Jon Kempin.

As the Galaxy started to find their way into the game, Republic almost opened the scoring late in the first half. In the 42nd minute, Blackwood found a streaking Trevin Caesar up field only for Josh Turnley to block the shot at the death.

Once the second half started, it was all Los Angeles, however.

The Galaxy took the lead just two minutes into the start of the second stanza when Lassiter whipped in a picture-perfect left-footed free kick past Evan Newton for the goal. The tally was Lassiter’s third career goal in the competition and his second of the tournament.

Just moments later, Jamieson put Curt Onalfo’s squad ahead for good. Streaking up the field, the 20-year-old midfielder beat a defender and then marched up field before firing a right-footed shot that deflected off a Republic player and in the net.

Onalfo’s side had a golden opportunity to add to their lead in the 77th minute when Lassiter sprinted past a defender and found Jack McInerney, only for the defender to be brought down by a Sacramento defender. Jaime Villarreal scooped up the rebound but had his shot saved by Newton.

The Galaxy will now travel to play the San Jose Earthquakes on July 10 at Avaya Stadium. San Jose defeated Seattle Sounders FC, 2-1 on Wednesday.
