Match Report: LA Galaxy fall to Manchester United 5-2 in friendly match

CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy fell 5-2 to Manchester United in front of a packed crowd of 25,667 at StubHub Center on Saturday evening.

Marcus Rashford notched a brace, while Marouane Fellaini, Anthony Martial and Hentrikh Mkhitaryan found the back of the net for the visitors. Giovani dos Santos scored a brace for the home side in the defeat.

Head coach Curt Onalfo trotted out a youth-laden lineup to start the match and his youngsters were given a baptism by fire against a talented United squad.

Rashford needed just three minutes to find the back after a defensive breakdown by Los Angeles. The talented young striker doubled the advantage in the 20th minute off a pass from Juan Mata.  United added a third just six minutes later when Fellaini found space behind the Galaxy defense for the finish.

Onalfo opted to rotate his squad in the second half bringing starters Giovani dos Santos, Jelle Van Damme, Ashley Cole, João Pedro, Romain Alessandrini and Jermaine Jones. The starters raised the quality of the play, but United was still able to find success as Martial and Mkhitaryan found the back of the net early in the second stanza.

Los Angeles got on the board in the 79th minute when Alessandrini found dos Santos behind the United defense to put the home team on the scoresheet and deny Manchester the shutout. The Galaxy added a second just moments before full time when dos Santos got a final touch on a Dave Romney header.

The Galaxy return to league play on Wednesday when they host Vancouver Whitecaps FC at StubHub Center. The match will be the first of two matches next week as Los Angeles will then travel to New England to take on the Revolution on Saturday.
