Three things we learned from the LA Galaxy’s 3-1 loss to the Portland Timbers presented by SNHU

PORTLAND, Ore. – LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano provides his Three Things We Learned from the LA Galaxy’s 3-1 defeat to the Portland Timbers presented by SNHU.

LA GALAXY LOSE GOAL TO VIDEO REVIEW

The LA Galaxy had their first experience with MLS’ Video Review system in their defeat in Portland.

Los Angeles appeared to take a 2-1 lead in the 14th minute off a tally from Gyasi Zardes, only for Video Review to determine that the Galaxy striker had used his hands to during the play. Television replays appeared to vindicate the decision as Zardes’ hands could be seen to touch the ball.

After the overturned goal, the Galaxy lost momentum as Portland scored two unanswered goals to give Los Angeles their third straight loss on the road.

JONA DOS SANTOS MAKES HS LA GALAXY DEBUT

New LA Galaxy signing Jonathan dos Santos made his Galaxy debut, going 26 minutes in the loss to Portland.

Despite the result, Dos Santos provided a stabilizing effect on the Galaxy midfield showing off a wide range of passing alongside defensive hustle during his brief cameo. Coincidentally, Dos Santos’ first shift for the Galaxy came on the exact two-year anniversary of his brother Giovani’s first appearance for the club.

After just one training session for the club, getting around 30 minutes in Portland bodes well for Dos Santos to make his first start for the Galaxy next week against New York City FC.

LA GALAXY’S POSTSEASON HOPES IN DANGER

The LA Galaxy’s hopes to extend their streak of consecutive postseason appearances to nine took another hit with Sunday’s loss in Portland.

Los Angeles’ defeat in Portland extends their winless streak in league play to a whopping seven games and places the squad in ninth place in the West, nine points back of sixth-place San Jose. The result is part of a dismal summer for the Galaxy who have won only one match since May (June 21 vs. Colorado) and will need to make up considerable ground in the West to reach the postseason.

To have hopes to reach the postseason, the Galaxy will need to begin picking up points at home starting with their clash with NYCFC on Saturday at StubHub Center.
