Vela put Mexico ahead in the 26th on a penalty kick after the handball in the box by a South Korea defender. Hernandez officially put the match out of reach in the 66th minute when tallied his 50th career goal in a Mexico shirt with a rocket into the right corner.

Eager to fight their way back into the contest, South Korea pushed forward and got on the board when Son sent a powerful blast past Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. However, it was too little too late for the Koreans who could not find the equalizer.
