LA Galaxy II Year in Review: Midfielders

Offensively, LA Galaxy II enjoyed a vast improvement from the 2017 season with 60 goals scored in 2018 compared to 32 in the previous year. The midfield played an important role in nearly doubling the team’s goals scored, recording 21 goals of the year’s total.

The 2018 campaign seemed to be the year of Efrain. In his first full professional season with the LA Galaxy, Efrain Alvarez repeatedly demonstrated his quality while playing with Los Dos. Alvarez finished the season with 12 goals and three assists, which translates to 2.61 goals or assists every 90 minutes he played. Alvarez’s ability to convert scoring opportunities secured his place as 11th in goals scored in the USL Western Conference and 18th in the USL.

When Alvarez found one goal, it was often followed by a second and sometimes a third. Alvarez recorded two hat tricks during the 2018 season. The first came in May when Los Dos hosted Saint Louis FC. At just 15-years-old, he became the youngest player to score a hat trick in USL history. Alvarez’s performance throughout the season earned him the No. 1 spot on USL’s 20 Under 20.

However, Alvarez was not the only bright spot in the midfield for the Galaxy.

In his third season with the club, Adrian Vera made his presence known for LA Galaxy II. During his 26 appearances for the team, Vera created 21 scoring chances, scored one goal and provided three assists. He was critical in keeping possession for LA Galaxy II in the midfield, making 700 passes with an 81 percent success rate.

Signed ahead of the 2018 season after playing for Bastia (France) and Veracruz (Mexico), Geoffrey Acheampong clocked over 1,700 minutes for Los Dos in 2018 and was a mainstay for the team’s midfield. In 25 appearances for LA Galaxy II, Acheampong created 35 chances for his team, the most of any other Los Dos player.

In his second year with LA Galaxy II, Miguel Aguilar played in 28 games, the most of any other midfielder. Aguilar recorded three goals and three assists in 2018, in addition to the 18 chances he created for the team.
