Match Report: LA Galaxy II fall to El Paso Locomotive FC in first meeting

Match Report ELPvLA

LA Galaxy II (4-5-6, 18 points) fell 3-0 on the road to USL Championship expansion side El Paso Locomotive FC (6-2-5, 23 points) on a hot Saturday evening in Texas.

Both sides got off to a slow start offensively, with the first major scoring opportunity for either team coming in the 21st minute. The Locomotive’s Louis Herrera fired a curling effort just outside of the box. LA Galaxy II goalkeeper Justin Vom Steeg made a brilliant save on full stretch, just getting his fingertips on the ball to push it away from the top-right corner.

After exchanging possession in the midfield for most of the first 45 minutes, the sluggish first half ended with a goal for the home side two minutes before halftime. James Kiffe sent a low cross into the box that found Jerome Kiesewetter who tucked his shot just inside the near post to give El Paso the halftime lead.

LA Galaxy II came out of Mike Munoz’s halftime talk with a renewed sense of urgency, creating two good opportunities from free kicks within the first three minutes of the second half. However, the way back into the game grew even more difficult for Los Dos after Brian Iloski was sent off for a late challenge on midfielder Richie Ryan in the 55th minute.

Starting in the 87th minute, El Paso sealed their victory at Southwest University Park with a second goal from Kiesewetter and a third from Omar Salgado only one minute later.

Next up, LA Galaxy II conclude their three-game road trip when they travel to face Reno 1868 FC at Greater Nevada Field on Saturday, June 15 at 7:30 p.m. PT.
