LOS ANGELES (Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2020) – The LA Galaxy have acquired winger Yony González on loan from S.L. Benfica in Portugal’s top-flight division using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM), the club announced today. González, 26, joins the LA Galaxy for the remainder of the 2020 MLS season with experience playing professionally in the top-flight divisions of Colombia and Brazil throughout his career. He will occupy an International roster spot and be added to the club’s roster pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and ITC.
“Yony is a dynamic playmaker who we believe can strengthen our attack this year,” said LA Galaxy Manager Dennis te Kloese. “He possesses a diverse skillset and will be an important addition to our roster. We look forward to welcoming Yony to Los Angeles and his contributions to our club this year.”
The Medellín, Colombia product began his professional career with Colombia’s Envigado Fútbol Club in 2013, where he remained before joining Atlético Junior in 2016. In 2018, the winger signed with Fluminense as part of Brazil’s top-flight division. During his time in Brazil, González scored nine times while adding five assists during one season with the club between Série A and Copa Sudamericana competition.
“We are excited to add Yony to our squad and think he can be a valuable player for us,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto. “He is a player that is in the prime of his career and has a lot of technical ability on the ball. We feel that he will give our team a spark on the offensive side.”
In 2020, González then signed with Portuguese side S.L. Benfica at the beginning of this season. Internationally, he has represented Colombia’s U-23 side during his career.
The LA Galaxy continue their Major League Soccer season this week with a match on the road at Banc of California Stadium against LAFC on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 3 p.m. PT live on FOX and FOX Deportes.
