LOS ANGELES (Thursday, May 11, 2023) – The LA Galaxy will square off against LAFC in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at BMO Stadium on Tuesday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. PT, it was determined as U.S. Soccer announced the Round of 16 matchups. The U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 match between the LA Galaxy and LAFC marks the 19th meeting between the two teams across all competitions, with the Galaxy leading the all-time series 7-6-5. Against LAFC, the Galaxy hold a 6-4-5 record in league play, a 0-2-0 record in the MLS Cup Playoffs and a 1-0-0 record in the U.S. Open Cup. The last time the two teams played in the Round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup, the Galaxy earned a 3-1 win over LAFC at Dignity Health Sports Park on May 25, 2022, with Javier “Chicharito” Hernández and Dejan Joveljić each tallying goals in the victory against LAFC.
The Galaxy advanced to the Round of 16 of the competition following a 3-1 win over Seattle Sounders FC in the Round of 32 at Dignity Health Sports Park on May 10. Memo Rodríguez tallied a brace as a second-half substitute, while Julián Aude scored his first career goal for the Galaxy in the victory against Seattle. LA Galaxy Head Coach and Sporting Director Greg Vanney improved to 4-1-0 in five all-time U.S. Open Cup matches as manager of the LA Galaxy with the win over the Sounders. Dating back to their first U.S. Open Cup match in 1999, the LA Galaxy hold an all-time record of 36-18-1 in 55 matches played in the competition and have been crowned champions twice (2001 and 2005). 2023 marks the 108th edition of the U.S. Open Cup, which began in 1913 and is the oldest national soccer competition in the United States.
The LA Galaxy return to MLS Regular Season action by playing host to the San Jose Earthquakes in the 96th edition across all competitions of the Cali Clásico at Dignity Health Sports Park, in a match presented by Corazón Tequila, on Sunday, May 14 (6:30 p.m. PT; MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, FS1, LA Galaxy Radio, LA Galaxy Spanish Radio).
