Match Preview: LA Galaxy II host Southern California rivals Orange County Blues FC on Friday

LA Galaxy II (2-0-1) will face an Orange County Blues (0-0-2) side still looking for its first point of the 2016 USL season when the two teams kickoff at 7:30 p.m. PT on Friday, April 8 at StubHub Center.

Galaxy II hold a 6-1-1 all-time record against the Blues and have outscored their rivals 20-6 in those matches. The Blues picked up their lone win against Los Dos in the last regular season meeting between the two sides. Galaxy II then went on to defeat the Blues 2-0 in the 2015 Western Conference semifinal en route to winning their first USL Western Conference Championship.


The Galxay II roster now features two members of the Blues' 2015 campaign as forward Denzel Slager signed with Los Dos in the offseason while defender Jeffrey Payeras, who spent 2015 on loan with Orange County from C.S.D. Municipal (Guatemala), has joined on loan for the 2016 season. 


Orange County currently sit 0-2-0 after suffering back-to-back home losses to Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 and Saint Louis FC. Friday’s match will be the Blues’ first road game of the season and Los Dos' 405 rivals will be looking to tally their first-ever win at StubHub Center.

Real Monarchs SLC 3 | LA Galaxy 3: In their third match in eight days, Galaxy II traveled to face Real Monarchs SLC in the team’s first road game of the season. After Galaxy II found themselves down 3-0 through the first 80 minutes, Los Dos came roaring to score three goals in the final ten minutes to pull level at 3-3 and steal a point at Rio Tinto Stadium. LA Galaxy Academy forward Ethan Zubak started the comeback with his first USL goal in the 81st minute. Ryo Fujii scored his first USL goal to double the lead in the 88th minuted while Jack McBean converted a penalty kick in the 89th to level the match.


Orange County Blues FC 1 | Saint Louis FC 3: The Blues faced Saint Louis FC at Anteater Stadium just three days after LA Galaxy II defeated Saint Louis 3-0 at StubHub Center on Wednesday. Orange County was the first to strike as defender Brenton Griffiths headed home the opening goal of the amtch. Saint Louis leveled the match just before the half to bring the score to 1-1. 1-1. After Orange County’s Pavle Popara missed a penalty kick in the 50th minute, Saint Louis’ Vince Cicciarelli would go on to put away two goals in the remainder of the half giving STLFC the 3-1 win.

GAME NOTES

  • Los Dos’ Bryam Rebellon and Ryo Fujii opened their USL goal accounts last week. Rebellon’s came on a long-range shot against Saint Louis FC last Wednesday. Fujii’s came against Real Monarchs SLC on Saturday. LA Galaxy Academy’s Ethan Zubak also opened his USL goal account when he scored Los Dos’ first against Salt Lake City.
  • Jeffrey Payeras and Denzel Slager were both members of the Orange County Blues in 2015. Slager appeared in 20 games, started in 17, scored six goals and tallied two assists. Payeras appeared and started in nine games in central defense, adding two assists.
  • Captain Jack McBean was selected to USL Team of the Week for the three goals he scored in last week’s two matches against Saint Louis FC and Real Monarchs SLC. It’s the second week in a row that a Galaxy II player has been selected. LA Galaxy forward Ariel Lassiter was selected in Week 1 for his two goal performance against Arizona United SC
  • Galaxy II’s +5 goal differential is the best in USL. The Galaxy have scored eight goals on the season, doubling the next best in USL
  • Orange County Blues FC Head Coach and General Manager Oliver Wyss, of Solothurn, Switzerland, won the 2015 Western conference regular season championship in his first season on the job.


Fans attending Friday’s match will have the chance to meet LA Galaxy’s Raul Mendiola ahead of kickoff. Mendiola will be at the Sales Booth in the northwest section of the concourse starting at 6:30 p.m. PT to take pictures and sign autographs. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT.
