United States Marine Corps Sergeant Jake Carew is our Hero of the Match vs the San Jose Earthquakes on May 28, 2025.
Sergeant Carew enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school in 2018, completing boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and Combat Engineer School at Camp Lejeune. He was then stationed with the 7th Engineer Support Battalion at Camp Pendleton. Carew’s first deployment was reinforcing the U.S. border wall from San Diego to Yuma. In 2019, he deployed to Australia with Marine Rotational Force-Darwin to cross-train with Australian engineers.
Upon return, he attended the elite Sapper School, graduating top of his class. He then deployed with Task Force Koa Moana to Palau in 2020, providing critical humanitarian aid during the pandemic. For his efforts, he received a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the unit earned a Meritorious Unit Commendation.
Soon after, Carew joined the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, deploying to Kuwait and earning a meritorious promotion to Sergeant while in Pakistan.
Carew is now entering his final year as a Cognitive Science major and remains deeply involved in USC’s veteran community.
