CARSON, Calif. – Giovani dos Santos returned to training this week and now the Mexican international is hopeful that he’ll be able to return to action in some capacity during Saturday’s match against Atlanta United.
Dos Santos has missed the Galaxy’s last four matches with a right hamstring injury picked up during the team’s defeat to New York City FC on March 11. The 28-year-old attacker resumed full training earlier this week and could take the field as soon as this weekend.
“Everything was good from yesterday to today. It’s a day by day thing. We’ll see how it is today,” head coach Sigi Schmid said. “He’s pretty much been a full week of training and I know they did some tests that they did so we’ll see how it is after training.”
After being held to just a pair of appearances this season due to injury, there is little doubt that dos Santos is itching to get back, but midfielder says that he needs to be smart with his minutes.
“You never want to get injured, but it’s been a good month to get stronger. I’ve been working really well,” dos Santos told reporters on Thursday. “I feel very good and I hope that I can be involved in the next game. Hopefully, [I can play] this week. I’ve been training with the team and we’ll see how it goes tomorrow. Hopefully, we can see.”
Determined to return to form for both club and country, dos Santos says he's been putting in the extra work necessary to return.
“It’s a long year. Good things are coming this year and I’m ready for it,” he said. “I know that I got injured, but I just kept working inside. People haven’t seen the work that I’ve been putting in the gym. I feel really good for the next few months.”
