He's the biggest offseason acquisition this year, and arguably Major League Soccer's grandest in quite some time. Now, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez will debut for the LA Galaxy on Saturday afternoon against the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Stadium.
The Dynamo's new era with head coach Tab Ramos also officially kicks off Saturday, as the former US men's national team legend will manage his first MLS match. After an offseason full of transfer reports and rumors, Mauro Manotas and Alberth Elis are back and joined by attacking midfielder Darwin Quintero, who arrives from Minnesota United. Marko Maric, a former Croatia youth international, appears primed to be the club's new No. 1 goalkeeper.
How do you replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic? By signing Hernandez, Mexico's all-time leading scorer. He joins a dynamic attack that includes Cristian Pavon, Aleksandar Katai, Sebastian Lletget and fellow El Tri standout Jonathan dos Santos. Questions linger on the defensive side, but all signs point to LA deploying a more complete group in 2020 than during Guillermo Barros Schelotto's first at the helm.
